Shingle style home on a narrow lot in Greenwich, Ct

Posted in Under Construction    |    Comments Off

This project was a custom home designed for a builder’s own home on a narrow “tear-down” lot in Greenwich, Ct. The narrow lot drove the overall design of the house, specifically the side entry garage at the front of the house. Their desire was to create a home of timeless design, which was accomplished by designing a house with extensive use of stone veneer & cedar shingle siding.

A finished basement extends underneath the garage & rear terrace, which increases the overall square footage of the house.

Ranch is converted to a shingle style house in Wilton, CT

The existing house is a 1 story ranch built in the 50′s, bought with the intention of tearing it down & building a new house on the property. A new shingle style house was designed on the existing foundation with the exception of the mud room & part of the kitchen. The 4400 SF house has a first floor plan that flows nicely, with all living spaces being oriented to the rear of the house. A L-shaped covered porch wraps around the rear corner, while opening onto an open deck with a dining area.

The second floor consists of 4 bedrooms and a large bonus room above the garage.

Exterior materials consist of cedar shingle siding, asphalt shingle roofing & PVC trim.

Front Elevation

The proposed house is designed for a young couple with children, which is essentially a ranch with both kid’s bedrooms on the second floor. The house is long & low, with a steeply pitched roof allowing for the kid’s bedrooms to be created within.

Stone veneer provides a visual base for the house up to the window sill, where the siding transitions to cedar shingle siding. Carriage style garage doors, board & batten shutters & PVC trim complete the exterior trim details.

The house sits on a sloping lot from front to rear, allowing for a walk-out basement to the rear.

Split level contemporary transformed into shingle style home

Posted in Under Construction    |    Comments Off

The existing house was a dated contemporary built in the ’70s, complete with vertical siding & brown aluminum framed windows (some even being trapezoidal). Consequently, the house lacked detail, character & charm.

The solution was to build a second story addition to create a master bedroom suite, which allowed the existing master bedroom suite to be converted to kid’s bedrooms. Part of the first floor was remodeled as well, allowing for a better use of space.

This project was to be done in 2 phases, with the first phase being the construction of the addition and partial exterior remodeling of the house. In between phases, the house will be strange, being stuck between 2 different styles. Once complete, it will look amazing!
