Queen Anne Victorian Addition by DeMotte Architects
The existing house was a very simple cape which lacked detail & charm. A 2 story addition was designed to the left side of the house, consisting of a kitchen & family room on the first floor & a master bedroom suite above. We created a covered entry, and modified both gable dormers.
This Queen Anne Victorian is a historic house in Greenwich built in 1896, listed on the Historic Landmarks Register. There had been previous additions to the house, with some not being architecturally correct. The house had a small kitchen & breakfast area, a small laundry room & a guest bedroom on the first floor that was poorly built & no longer needed.
The second floor consisted of a master bedroom suite along with 2 bedrooms and a hall bath. With 3 young boys, an additional bedroom was needed.
The design challenge for the architect was to create an architecturally appropriate addition to the house given it’s historic nature, while also meeting the needs of the clients. The design solution was to remove the poorly constructed rear addition and build a 2 story addition in it’s place. The addition allowed for a larger kitchen & breakfast area on the first floor, along with a game room.
The second floor of the addition created 2 bedrooms, an additional bathroom, & a laundry room. The master bedroom was also remodeled creating additional closet space & a desk area out of previously little used sitting room. The covered porch off the living room also allowed for creating a roof deck off the master bedroom.
Green design principles incorporated by the architect included spray foam insulation, heat recovery ventilators, bamboo flooring, and high efficiency LED lighting.
